Cotton Producing Region of Pakistan
Cotton is an important cash crop of Pakistan and is
cultivated on ten per cent of the total area under cultivation in the country.
On account of agricultural backwardness, the per acre production is 20 to 30
Muns which is very low in terms of global production. In servant countries of
the world including Australia, Egypt and
Turkey the per acre production is 60 to 70 Muns. The per acre production of cotton in Pakistan has increased
as a result of the recent agricultural reforms but still, it is much less than
that of other major cotton growing countries of the world. Those regions of

Punjab
79 per cent of the total cotton produced in the country comes
from Punjab. In Punjab cotton is cultivated on 2426 thousand hectares while production in 10268 thousand bales.
Thus the per hectare production is 3.5 bales per hectare.
Sindh
Sindh is famous all over the world for its cotton production.
Some experts are of the view that the cultivation of cotton in the world began
thousands of years ago from Sindh. For this reason, Sindh has its historical
importance in connection with cotton. In Sindh, the area under cotton
cultivation is 367 thousand hectares
while production is 2648 thousand bales annually. Canal irrigated areas of
Sindh are well-known for cotton production. They include the areas of Hyderabad
Division Dadu Thatha and Badin. Besides these, the areas of Sukkur Division,
Sangarh and Tharparkar are also known for the production of cotton.
NWFP
In NWFP, the area under cotton cultivation is 2.1 thousand hectares, while production
5.2 thousand bales. This province produces only one per cent for the country’s
total cotton, Bannu and Dera Ismail Khan are the main cotton growing regions of
NWFP.
Baluchistan
Baluchistan production only 1.5 per cent of the country’s
total cotton, In Baluchistan the area under cotton cultivation is 37.8 thousand
hectares and production is 977 thousand
bales. Cotton cultivation in Baluchistan is confined to its northern and
north-eastern canal irrigated areas.

The special type of cotton produced in Pakistan has its
importance in the country’s market. Pakistan is the cotton exporting country
but with the expansion of the country’s industries, its domestic consumption
has increased. It has led to a decrease in our country exports. The per hectare
production of cotton in Pakistan is much less than that of other countries but
still, Pakistan is included in the cotton exporting countries of the world
Cotton Trading Corporation of Pakistan performs this task. Japan is the leading
buyer of Pakistan’s raw cotton. Besides the Pakistan also exports cotton yarn.
In 1999-2000h, Pakistan earned 55819 million rupees from the export of cotton
yarn.
